In February 2000 I was unemployed, broke and living at home with my parents – at the ripe old age of 27! That’s when I decided I was going to have a career change. I was going to write a novel! Some friends were supportive of the idea but others looked at me as though I had rocks in my head. ‘You haven’t even studied creative writing,’ they pointed out. ‘And do you know how hard it is to get published in Australia? Don’t get your hopes up.’

I had read the grim statistics on how hard it was to get a publishing deal in Australia but I was determined to give this new career my best shot. So before I even started writing my novel I went to the newspaper and cut out one of those Top Ten lists of books. I liquid-papered out the name of the book in the number one spot and then I went to my computer and in the exact same font I typed my name and the name of my novel. Then I printed it out and stuck it to the top of the list. So now I had a Top Ten list of books with my name in the number one spot.

I put that list next to my laptop and I looked at it every day I was writing. Every morning, before I sat down at my computer, I started to spend five minutes visualising walking into a bookstore and seeing a book on the shelves with my name on the cover. When friends found out what I was doing they thought I was a bit loopy but I didn’t care – I kept working on my novel and imagining myself succeeding. Three years later that novel was in bookstores. The girl most likely spent sixteen weeks in the local Top Ten including four weeks at number one. It has been reprinted about five times. Better still, I sold the film rights and hope to turn my novel into a movie!
