Daisy Copper group

Small Coppers with variegated underside hind wings and rounded wings; copper colour somewhat brassy in tone. Drakensberg Daisy Copper, Karoo Daisy Copper, Jitterbug Daisy Copper and Donkey Daisy Copper. While Dickson’s Strandveld Copper (above) belongs in this group, it is noticeably larger.

2 Drakensberg Daisy Copper Chrysoritis oreas

Wingspan: 21–23 mm 22–24 mm. Identification: 2A upper side, 2B underside. Underside with complicated pattern of saggitate brown marks on a silvery white ground. Extent of upper side spotting variable, sometimes only single spots in forewing and hind wing cells. Sexes similar, with less extensive dark upper side markings. Flight of flushed slow, jinking; soon returns to original perch. May dive into a tuft of grass in high winds. flight more random. Distribution: Rare. Montane Grassland in e KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg foothills, 1 800–2 200 m, Bulwer to Loteni, south to Sani Pass and Bushman’s Nek. Habitat: Mountains, hillsides. Flight period: Single brooded, late Sept to mid-Nov. Larval food: Thesium spp. Larvae associated with Myrmicaria nr nigra ants.
