The stated aims of The Global Media Campaign (GMC) Charity to End FGM include:

to promote the education and training of people working in journalistic media in Africa and across the world to enable them more effectively to raise awareness of the dangers to physical and mental health caused by the practice of Female Genital Mutilation.

(Charity Commission, 2017)

In order to do so, the GMC Charity works ‘closely with activists and broadcasters around the world and especially in Africa’ in the provision of ‘specialised media training’ as well as ‘Producing media communications which open up conversations about Female Genital Mutilation at the local, national and global level’ (Charity Commission, 2017). Their ultimate goals are to ‘generate change and work towards a world which is free of Female Genital Mutilation’ (Charity Commission, 2017).

As for The Guardian’s original End FGM Global Media Campaign, it has gone on to spread far and wide, including the United States of America (USA). As Chapter 2 indicated, it was in the USA that Jaha Mapenzi Dukureh started her own anti-FGM petition with Change.org (Dukureh, 2014). With the continuing support of The Guardian, she would become an international anti-FGM activist, instrumental in achieving The Gambia’s subsequent FGM ban. Chapter 5 will provide further insights into the aftermath of that African-led campaign and its multimedia activism model.
