TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU DO

I often get pulled up for talking about work in social situations, but I’ve realised that I do this because I’m proud of the work I do, and I want to share it. In opening that dialogue, discussing it with others and displaying my passion, I am recognising the many ways that I’m growing both in terms of skills and as a person. The more we take pride in our work, the more likely we are to share and reflect on our achievements. By keeping work ‘at work’, we don’t always allow ourselves the headspace to acknowledge our wins, be they big or small.

So the next time you’re proud of a work achievement, share it with someone not at work. Talk them through why you’re proud of it, what you contributed to the process and how you’ve grown from it, and accept the well-deserved praise you’ll get. Try to make it a habit: find someone who really supports you and wants to listen, as very often they can help identify things you hadn’t even thought of – thus helping you to be even more accepting of your talent. And enjoy the emotion you feel when you acknowledge your success, whether it’s pure excitement, or that tingly feeling you get just before your eyes start to well up, or just the satisfaction of feeling that little bit more complete. You really are doing a good job, so take it in your stride.

One of the hardest and saddest things I see is when women, in particular, have spent 20 years in their role and are still battling imposter syndrome. Somewhere along their journey, they were made to think they weren’t worthy of their role or their place in the industry. But when you accept and take pride in what you do, you show other people that you do deserve to be there. We have to stop questioning whether we’ve done enough to earn our place and start thinking about how showing off our success can help us – but also others. Maybe an article you wrote encourages someone to quit their day job and follow their dreams. Maybe a photo you shared helps someone else secure a project they are pitching for. Maybe an anecdote you tell helps another person with a mental health issue. By embracing your self-worth, and bringing it to the surface, you can also help others.

I’m trying my hardest not to round this off with a motivational Beyoncé lyric, but ultimately the sooner you believe in yourself and accept that you’re good at your job and you have talent worth acknowledging, the easier it will be to convince others you’re worth the investment.

We have to stop letting our doubts overtake what we can achieve.
