Beginning in the 1960s, a group of English enthusiasts determined to bring attention to the native multipurpose heeler dog, who was near extinction. While some families may have been continuously raising the dogs for decades, in the early days of stabilizing the breed there was probably some use of corgi and Manchester terrier blood. The Lancashire Heeler Club was formed in 1978, with a breed standard and KC registration following soon after. In 2003, the KC labeled the native breed “endangered” due to its small gene pool and the resultant need to carefully monitor health issues. Breeders responded with a major pedigree and health initiative.

Lancashire Heelers have been exported in small numbers to Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and North America. The UKC and the AKC FSS registry recognize the breed. The United States Lancashire Heeler Club was organized in 2007.
