âTonightâs the big night, huh?â Jason smiled as Harry led him into the living room where he, Luke and Max had paused their hot game of Uno. Sheldon let out a âWoofâ when he saw Jason, but it was a friendly greeting, and he went back to lounging between Max and Luke.
âLuke, this is Jason,â Harry said, by way of introduction. âHeâs a good friend, and the head of our legal department at Landon Literary. Jason, this is my neighbor Luke. Heâs been a huge help for me while Max has been here.â Luke flinched slightly, and Harry wondered if heâd said something wrong. In spite of their casual evening, and their reassurances to each other that nothing had changed, there was still a tinge of awkwardness in the air. âMax, you remember Jason, donât you?â
Max was white as a sheet, like he had eaten something bad and was about to throw it up. Not five minutes ago, they were playing cards and Max was laughing, but as soon as he saw Jason, he retreated back to the shy kid heâd been when he first arrived.
Maybe Harry was jumping the gun. What if heâd misread Maxâs excitement in his room earlier?
âHi, Max. Nice to see you again.â Jason smiled at Max, but Harry could see that it had only made matters worse, because Max tucked his head into his chest and didnât respond.
âMax? Buddy, whatâs wrong?â What was that all about? Max knew Jason from before. He even liked Jason.
Was Max afraid of people in authority, like attorneys? Maybe something had happened with one of the dickhead friends of Curtis, and now Max was afraid of people in the law? He was going to have to talk to him about it after Jason and Luke left. He knew Max still considered his past to be a secret, so heâd have to get his permission before talking even to Luke about it.
Jason must have noticed Maxâs reaction as well, because he said, âHarry, maybe you and I should go into another room to review these documents?â
Or maybe Max didnât want to be adopted by Harry. He obviously couldnât make any long-lasting decision like that for Max without making sure he understood everything first.
âYeah, sure. You guys keep playing. Max, donât let Luke cheat. Heâll try to mess you up with those reverse cards.â He winked to let Max know he wasnât serious, and to hopefully snap him out of his fear.
He led Jason into his office, and closed the door so they could talk privately.
âFirst, let me say how glad I am that everything has worked out for you, Harry. I know this wasnât what you had planned, but I also know that you are making the right decision.â Jason opened his leather satchel and pulled out files as he spoke.
âIs it crazy that Iâm more excited than I am nervous? I mean, this is a huge change for me. I know you know that, considering what a dick I was about it in the beginning, and itâs a huge change for Max, too.
