As usual in mixed groups, the younger women’s clothing offers the best dating evidence in this family photograph: formal day dresses whose slender lines demonstrate the desired hour-glass silhouette; elaborate bodices; straight, narrow sleeves; and plain skirts, made smooth over the hips before flaring gently to the floor.

Note the lady’s finely-tucked blouse, with the characteristic high collar of the decade, whilst the narrow sleeves suggest a date close to 1900. Her flat straw hat, decorated with shells and other trimmings, is a summer style seen most often in the early years of the decade, whilst the men’s high-crowned straw hats represent two of the various styles of summer headwear current at the time.
