Probation Station

Grace had already checked out three transit lines by mid-day. She had meant to stop in and spend the first part of her shift with Crystal at the school, but she’d been chained to the station in order to finish her reports. The hoarder report had been easy to finish; she’d been able to leave most of it in the detectives’ hands, and it was still open.

The report for Leon was far more difficult. Amya had taken care to go into the system and fill out her missing information. A pang stabbed in Grace’s stomach as she thought of Amya. Her feelings were so mixed on it, she didn’t know what to do. Grace popped a dried mango, one of her favorites, into her mouth and chewed.

The call came in as she turned onto Montgomery, wishing it was time for her lunch break. There was little to do on a Thursday afternoon.

"County—337. Robbery in progress at Noon's gas station on 18th and Jerilyn."

"10-4," Grace answered and hit her sirens and lights.

She didn't bother to answer dispatch again. They were spewing information to her, and she listened intently. Two other officers were on their way, and she hoped she got there first.

"One suspect. Short, male, Hispanic. The caller stated the individual had a gun. The caller is female and states there are at least two other people in the store."

Grace nodded to no one and turned the corner, topping speeds at forty on the side streets. She tapped her brakes before coming up to an intersection and leaned forward, looking both ways before speeding across the roadway.

Once she pulled into the station, she parked her car and got out, weapon drawn. Deputy Morgan was already on scene, jumping her call, and waved his hand at her. He had waited to go inside. Grace nodded to him and they stepped carefully toward double doors covered in stickers. Grace kept crouched down as she moved closer to the door, wanting to be safe and still wanting to keep an eye on what was going on inside. The suspect was still there. Her stomach somersaulted as she made eye contact with him.

"Shit," she muttered and ducked down lower. "He's on his way out."

Morgan stared with wide eyes as the Plexiglas door slammed open and a gun was shoved into his face. Grace stood straight, her back rigid, her left foot in front of her right as she took her stance, her left pointer finger on the trigger.

"Hands! Put your hands up!"

The kid flinched but didn't move. He didn't pull the trigger, didn't back down.

"Hands! Hands! Hands!" Grace yelled, her voice going hoarse in the process.

Morgan raised his own weapon when he realized the stand-off was going to happen rather than being shot in the head. Grace shuffled her feet and took three steps to get right up behind the suspect. She made eye contact with Morgan and holstered her weapon. Morgan kept the suspect busy.

"Put your hands up!" he shouted and took a step back to get better aim.
