Chapter 12: Kat

That morning, in the stillness of our shared space, Angela's words echoed in my mind, the essence of her confession sending jolts of warmth through my veins. It was an intoxicating blend of terror and elation, an unexpected joy that made my heart flutter, but one that also seemed to tighten its grip on my chest with the reality of the danger we faced.

"I need to go, Kat," Angela murmured, pulling away from our lingering embrace. I knew she was right, that the evidence against Jim wouldn't collect itself, but my heart clenched at the thought of her wading back into danger.

"Angela..." I began, the protest forming on my lips.

"I know what you're going to say," she cut in, her eyes meeting mine, the solemn determination there was unmistakable, "and I promise you, I can handle myself."

"But Angela…" I faltered, words failing me.

"Yes, Kat?" she prompted, holding my gaze steadily.

My mind raced, a torrent of conflicting emotions threatening to spill over. I was elated, stunned by the depth of Angela's feelings for me, feelings that I reciprocated. Yet, the looming danger cast a shadow over our intimate moment. My heart ached with worry; my mind taunted with visions of what Jim could do to her.

I shook my head, pushing away the images. "Angela, you're an FBI agent," I said, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. "You're more than capable of handling yourself. But it doesn't mean you have to do this alone. We're a team, remember?"

She chuckled lightly, her hand reaching up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Yes, we are," she agreed, her voice soft. "But we also have our own strengths, our own roles. You need to trust me on this, Kat."

Trust. The word hung in the air between us, heavy with unspoken promises and shared experiences. Trust meant letting her walk into danger, believing she'd come back safe. Trust meant respecting her capabilities, her expertise, her choice.

Sighing, I nodded, pressing my lips into a thin line. "I trust you, Angela," I said, the words a whisper, a prayer.

Her hand cradled my cheek, her thumb tracing a comforting path along my skin. “I know, Kat. I know.”

It was a quiet assurance, a promise. With one last look, Angela turned towards me, kissed me with her tender lips and then left the room.

As I sat there, replaying our conversation, I realized something: I had to trust Angela. Trust her strength, her skills, her commitment to our mission.

And so, with a renewed sense of purpose, I got up from the bed, ready to face whatever came next. Because whatever it was, we wouldn't face it alone. We had each other.

That afternoon, the sunlight poured into our room, casting elongated shadows that danced with the rhythm of our thoughts. Angela and I sat across from each other, two magnets pulled together by a force stronger than us, and yet held apart by the gravity of our situation.

"So, what do we do now?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowed in thought.
