For more on soul mates, read Q&A number 56, “Are soul mates a real thing?” in chapter 9, “The Big Questions.”

34. Can spirits intervene on our behalf?

In a variety of car-accident near misses, sitters have reported that they had the feeling to go down a different road or to turn at the last second. I experienced a near miss myself while driving through a national park on vacation. I heard a voice say distinctly in my ear, “Go slow.” This was not an intuitive feeling but the voice of my mother in spirit. I took my foot off the gas just in time to avoid being hit by a kayak sliding off the roof of an SUV in front of me. (My mother and I were once in a terrible car accident together, so it isn’t surprising that she would be the one to warn me.) If we are willing to be open and aware, spirits can direct our attention to danger. Being open and aware is simply living without (or with reduced) distraction. In my life, I’ve learned to be fully present in each moment of my life rather than obsessing about the past or feeling anxious for the future. (For the most part, I’m successful!) I also live in quiet surroundings—no TV, music playing in the background, or constant text interruptions.

It’s important to note that even when we choose to live in open awareness, it doesn’t mean that spirits can and will intervene to prevent every accident. If this were the case, we’d all live on Earth forever! However, it is often in times of great stress or trauma that we can become aware of the intervention of Good Samaritans or loved ones in spirit.

For instance, when a young woman shared the memory of her death with me, I saw a mysterious dark-haired lady in the vision. As the young woman lay dying by the side of a road, following a devastating accident, the dark-haired lady knelt beside her and held her hand. It would have been easy to assume that this was her mother, but her mother was in the room with me and didn’t look at all like the lady in the vision. Despite the flashing lights in the background, blinking an obvious alarm, I felt tremendous peace.

“That is so weird,” her mother said to me after I shared the vision. “I was told later by the police that a lady with dark hair, who said she was a nurse, stayed with my daughter while paramedics tried saving her life. After my daughter died, the woman couldn’t be found to give a statement.”

If this mysterious lady was indeed a spirit Samaritan, the intervention’s purpose was to ease a young woman’s passing into the afterlife rather than to keep her on Earth.

“I’m so relieved,” said her mother at the close of our session together. “I couldn’t bear the thought that my baby died alone.” In effect, this intervention also eased the mind of a fearful and grieving mother.
