CHAPTER 28

Lexie sat and stared at the plain tan walls of the hospital room when Dr. Wyatt approached her. “Good morning, Lexie. Dani’s lungs should be strong enough for her to breathe on her own by now. If not, I’m afraid she may never come off the vent. We are going to wait for her parents to arrive and then attempt to take her off and see if she can take in air on her own.”

Lexie acknowledged the doctor. After he left the room, she held her girlfriend’s hand tightly, “Sweetie, the doctor says if you are ever going to breathe without the vent, then you must do it today. Dani, I know you can hear me, babe. Please breathe when they take you off the ventilator, please, this is our last chance. I can’t do this life without you.”

Mr. and Mrs. Watkins stood at the doorway, listening to Lexie begging their daughter to breathe. Dr. Wyatt returned and asked everyone to step away from the bed so he could safely remove the ventilator. Lexie bowed her head and said a prayer as she waited to see if Dani was going to breathe on her own. The room was utterly silent except for the whirring of the ventilator until the doctor informed everyone that he was preparing to bring Dani out of sedation. Once she was awake and aware, he would take her off the vent, and hopefully, she would breathe on her own.

Dr. Wyatt brought Dani out of sedation without a problem. Lexie cried when Dani opened her eyes. Oh, sweetie, I have longed to see those enchanting eyes for the past eleven days. Now, please, breathe.

Dani tried to fight the vent in her throat until Lexie walked over and placed her hand on Dani’s, “Sweetie, don’t fight the vent. Dr. Wyatt is about to take this thing out, and we need you to breathe, baby, okay? Do you understand?”

Dani calmed down and nodded her head in understanding. The doctor took the tube out, and everyone held their breath waiting for Dani.

She coughed when the tube came out, and then she struggled to breathe, but Lexie held her hand and encouraged her, “Breathe sweetie. Slow breathes, baby. Come on, you can do it.”

Dani took a short, shallow breath and cried out in pain.

“It’s okay, Dani. We expect there to be some pain for a little while longer. You haven’t breathed on your own in eleven days, and because your lungs were so severely damaged, it may be painful when you breathe. It means your lungs are working.” explained Dr. Wyatt.

Lexie couldn’t stop the flow of tears as she gazed at her girlfriend. Thank you, Lord, for answering my prayers. The nurse came in, and the doctor asked everyone to leave the room so they could examine the patient. Lexie and Dani’s parents didn’t go far. They stood right outside Dani’s hospital room. They talked amongst themselves while they waited for the doctor to finish so they could see Dani.

After what seemed like hours, the doctor finally came out and informed them, “Dani is doing well.
