We have found that many children and teens easily agree to this arrangement. Even if the teen responds most negatively about sharing information, saying something like:

Client:

I don’t want my parents to know anything! I’m not agreeing to that and I won’t come to therapy if you are going to tell them anything I say!

We can still respond respectfully while not tying our own hands in the process:

Therapist:

Okay, I get it. The idea of your parents knowing things that you say or feel is pretty upsetting to you right now. A lot of kids feel that way too. Some people worry that their parents will annoy or nag them about what they said . . . some know that their parents won’t be able to handle it and may get upset. There can be a lot of other reasons that you may not want to share things. I want to understand your reasons more, because they are important. For now, I can promise you that I will not share what you say, but I will continue to work with your parents and what I learn about you will still help me to help them, while keeping your words private. Unless of course I am worried about your safety, and those other limits to confidentiality that we talked about.
