CHAPTER ELEVEN

The remaining pair of fae came for me while I was still gawking at the bird. Like most predators, they focused on the sensitive spots first. One went for my leg, the other for my injured side.

I noticed the approach in time to spin and see one of them, another human-looking male fae throw another rock that missed hitting me by maybe half of a foot. The missile stuck the driver’s side door of the Jeep instead and briefly rocked the vehicle onto two wheels.

The one diving towards my thighs opted for claws instead. It moved so fast and low to the ground that I couldn’t even tell what kind of animal it was supposed to be. All I was sure of were bared fangs, sharp claws, and a sleek, fur covered body.

For a moment, I considered the third option - the use of magic. Most of the spells in my repertoire took a while to call up. One of the newest, however, could be used in a pinch if what Skaath taught me could be trusted. All I needed to make it happen was a single uttered word.

But at this point a word was too much to ask for. I’d only just opened my mouth when the beast drew to striking distance. With no more time to spare, and the gun still in my hands, I didn’t bother lining up my sights. Instead, I just shot from the hip like one of those old western movies.

The first round struck pavement.

Another winged the creature, but went through and through.

Then it was on me, ripping at my legs and howling up a storm.

To my surprise, the first knife edge of pain that I felt came from my shoulder, where Skaath’s corpse light filled bird was perched, as opposed to my legs.

A burning wave of agony flowed in my legs soon enough. But as I watched with stunned, fearful eyes, the pain wasn’t from the attacker’s claws. It came from a sudden, freezing layer of barbed ice that was crawling up my leg with terrifying speed.

The ice growing up my body was so cold that it burned. Burned like the winds cutting through the Erlking’s barren lands, or the snow I’d trudged through in Ranger school. It burned so much that I was sure that my flesh would blacken and extremities rot as the frostbite claimed bits and pieces of me for itself.

The ice gathered speed as it approached a point just under my chin. The pain reached a crescendo then ended just as abruptly as it had begun. I looked down to see that the layers of frost covering my body had come to a stop, leaving the arm, leg, and chest on the injured side of my body covered in thick, sturdy layers of what looked like crystelione, semi-see through, medieval plate armor.

There were claw marks on that armor just over the leg, and I looked away from myself to see that the fae creature attacking me, a nightmare
