Six

ZEPHYR

The words were flowing from Elda’s mouth now.

Although her words were meant to send me running, they were poetry to my ears because they came from her lips.

Now, if only I could help her to see that she was wrong.

“You’d hurt me?” I arched a brow, skeptical.

“I would drain your blood dry.”

She lied. I knew it. She might fear that she would drain me dry, but every ounce of my being knew she wouldn’t.

Some might call me a foolish fairy, but they didn’t understand the fated mate sense. We put it all on the line for the one we’re meant to be with. It just so happens that our mate is incapable of hurting us.

I’d bet my life on it.

And that was exactly what I was doing.

“Then do it,” I said, tilting my head back to expose my neck. “Bite me now. Take all you can drink, because I have no intention of backing down just because you fear yourself. You’re scared you’ll lose control, but I’m not.”

Elda wasn’t moving. She wasn’t speaking. She seemed frozen in place, and I couldn’t tell what thoughts ran through her mind.

“To answer your question, no. My kind doesn’t need the darkness, but you should know, Elda, that doesn’t mean I don’t need you. I do need you. You’re my mate.”

Finally, her expression changed as she processed my words. She leaned back and retracted her fangs.

“Mate?” she whispered, clearly knowing the importance of that word.

“Yeah, mate.” I placed my hand on the curve of her waist, my wolf side needing physical contact with her as much as I needed air to breathe. “If you know the meaning of the word, then you know that means I wanted you since the first moment I saw you. That was so long ago. I’m sick of waiting. I don’t want to live like that anymore, do you?”

“No,” she said breathlessly, though my warrior woman was still frozen in place.

“You’re worried because we’ve been taught that vampires hunt the fae, is that right?”

“Yes.”

“Well, maybe what we’ve been taught is wrong. Or, at least, it doesn’t account for mates. We have to explore this. Look how much the world has changed already. Fae don’t hide from your kind anymore. There is a treaty between our people. And my kind intermingled with the wolf shifters, giving us more power, so your kind didn’t have the urge to drain us on sight anymore.”

“You’re safer if we stay apart,” Elda spoke but not with words I wanted to hear.

“You’re afraid if you start, you won’t be able to stop,” I assessed. “But I refuse to believe it. And I also refuse to live my life without giving us a try.”

She shook her head back and forth slowly, as though it was painful for her to do so. “I can’t risk you.”

“I think the problem is that you have never felt yourself so close to falling, and you’re scared.”

“I’m scared for you.”

“Don’t be.” I pulled her down to kiss me, knowing she might still pull away.
