Ravlen ran faster than she thought her legs could carry her, and Yuna was right behind.

They came to an intersection, five roads meeting at once.

“Which way?” Yuna turned to Ravlen.

“I don’t know.”

They stood, huffing on the street corner as Ravlen looked left and right, hoping the decision would come to her.

“They all feel the same.”

Yuna closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. “Left.”

“You sure?”

Yuna raised an eyebrow. “I’d sense that high-pitched laugh from miles away. She can’t be far.”

They walked slower now, deliberately doing their best to blend. The less attention they drew to themselves, the better. They were so close and couldn’t let any echo get in their way. Ravlen started to relax.

We can get Donelle and be home by dinner. Madame and Janna will be proud, and no new entries on the island will appear. Then it’ll just be a matter of shutting this place down.

Ravlen watched the houses full of families and children as they walked by. A father was grilling steaks on a BBQ while a mother was deep in a game of hopscotch with two daughters. They were all laughing.

Another family played cards around a picnic table.

A little further, a game of street hockey was underway. The ball rolled from under one of the player’s sticks and bumped straight into Ravlen’s foot. She picked it up and brought it over to the awaiting smiles of both teams. They were a mix of boys and girls, all about Ravlen’s age. A girl ran over and took the ball from Ravlen’s hand. Yuna gasped as the girl’s fingers brushed Ravlen’s.

“Thanks! Want to come play with us?”

Ravlen’s jaw dropped. “Ginnie?”

“Come on, Ginnie! Toss the ball!” another player called out. “We’re so close to winning!”

“Be sure to come play one day! We’re always out here on Sundays and Thursdays. Catch you soon!” The echo version of Ginnie turned and resumed the game as though nothing had happened.

Ravlen walked forward, feeling like she was in a trance.

“That was Ginnie. She’s a year older than us. I know her from Games Day a few years ago. She was kind and quiet…. and she hated sports…” Ravlen looked back, disbelieving the sight of Ginnie laughing while knocking the ball off the goal post.

“It’s not her,” Yuna said softly. “It looks like her but it’s not her.”

“But what if Ginnie accidentally wandered into the echo?”

“She didn’t.”

“What if there’s a new entry and someone enticed her in?”

“It’s not her, Ravlen.” Yuna put her arm around Ravlen and gently led her away from the hockey scene. “She’s an echo of the Ginnie you know. We have to stay focused on Donelle.”

Ravlen shook the feeling away as much as she could. Donelle wasn’t far. She couldn’t let the echo have its way and pull her from her goal, not now. But a part of her was desperate to know if that could be the real Ginnie.

Unless the echo did that on purpose? Did it put someone I know in front of me so that
