Chapter Twenty-One

4.01 p.m.

Sam passes over a handful of change to the man in the coffee van, then picks up the two steaming mugs of tea and comes to sit down on the bench next to me. While he’s been ordering the drinks, I’ve been staring at the swirling waters of the Thames, focusing on the boats buzzing up and down the river, and watching the cans, twigs and other bits of detritus lapping up on the shoreline. Even though we’re in the heart of the city, there is a certain peace that comes with being right by the water, a sense of continuity that only a river which has been flowing through this spot for hundreds of years can bring. I remind myself that many disasters and conflicts have come and gone, but the Thames has kept its steady course, bringing life to the city.

I prop my feet up on the stone balustrade which separates the river from the bank, and lean back, cupping the warm mug in my hands. It’s one of those giant Sports Direct ones, probably big enough to hold a pint of tea. It’s not my usual hot drink of choice, but there’s something frightfully British about having a cup of tea in a crisis, and just holding the mug brings a strange kind of comfort with it.

I take a sip and nearly choke.

“That’s a bit sweet,” I protest. “There’s meant to be room for actual tea and milk in among all this sugar.”

Sam pulls a face. “Thought it might do you some good, having a bit of extra sweetness.”

“I think you’ll find I’m sweet enough,” I say lightly. Sam nearly smiles at my bad joke. “This much could send a girl onto a serious sugar high, and I’ve had enough excitement already for one day, thank you very much.”

“Well, they say sugar is good for shock and stuff.”

Sam shrugs, and adds an extra packet to his own mug, which is emblazoned with the words Best teacher in the world. I wonder how it’s ended up as a communal mug at a hot drink van. Maybe Mrs Choudhary got rid of it after being presented with it by a particularly irksome pupil.

“The only shock I’ve had today is you being nice to me just now,” I retort, then instantly feel guilty for being an ungrateful so-and-so. “Sorry. Thank you for the drink.”

Sam nods his head in acknowledgement. “And I suppose I should say thank you for giving me my camera back undamaged, if not unsullied.”

I can’t help smiling at this.

“I’m still determined to stop you sending those pictures of me,” I reply.

Sam smiles back, and I notice the way the skin around his eyes crinkles with the fullness of his grin.

“We’ll see about that,” he says. He stirs his tea with a wooden stick, and then sets it carefully down on the bench between us. “You see, the thing that’s confusing me is that you’re really desperate for your bosses not to find out that you’ve
