CHAPTER NINE

“That may have been the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen you do.” Tati said in my ear a half hour later.

I was back with the Erlking’s army by then. After the duel with Licue was set, I’d finished my survey of the bone dragon camp. While the area surrounding that massive skeleton was choked with tents, the ground in the actual shadow of the behemoth had been crafted into a space fit for kings. Long, polished floors covered the ground under the dragon’s spine, and tables had been placed to seat all High Lords, plus a few extra attendees.

Once I gave the space an OK with Captain Smith, I’d retreated back to the armored vehicles, which is where Tati’s voice had found me again.

Wait, actually. Not just her voice. When I turned to speak in the direction I’d heard her, I found Tati standing there, un-glamoured and fully visible, walking towards me.

“Good evening, Tatiana.” said the Erlking in greeting as he saw her approach. “Always nice to see you.”

“That’s a lie, noble Erlking.” replied Tati with a respectful bow of her head. “But I appreciate your courtliness, nonetheless. I’m rooting for you, by the way. You’re already a greater Lord than half those elves will ever be, and it’s time they acknowledge it.”

The Erlking graced Tati with a nod of his own before approaching me as well.

As both Tati and the Erlking approached me from two different directions, I couldn’t help but wince and feel my cheeks heat up under their gaze. Without even thinking of it, I lifted a hand and started fidgeting with my hair near the spot where the recently revealed crown of driftwood jutted from my scalp.

I felt embarrassed. No, scratch that. I felt ashamed. When I’d first seen Licue, the only thing I could think about was what she’d done to me in the past, and how I’d spent most of a year looking over my shoulder in fear of finding her there. So instead of acting like a professional, I’d jumped the gun and had been the one to start casting the first spell.

Sure, she’d been faster than me, and had gotten her own magical shot off first and made herself look like the aggressor in the process. But that didn’t change the fact that I was the true reason for that violent display. I’d been the one to escalate things in the first place.

It would have been different if I’d come here to get some revenge or even launch a preemptive strike myself. But I hadn’t come to pick fights. I’d come to keep the Erlking safe, and maybe intimidate a few fae into cooperating with him if the opportunity arose.

And now, because of my idiocy, I had a duel to worry about. If I kept this up, I’d be so weighed down with borrowed trouble that my distraction would leave the Erlking vulnerable to attack and ambush.

From here on out, I needed to keep a low profile and avoid drawing more trouble.
