Kris knew a solid business plan required the establishment of organized and tranquil surroundings. That was the foundation. Her mentors, Lou Ethel and Mary Jo, were entrepreneurs who founded successful businesses. But first and foremost, they were the CEOs of their homes. As a seven-year-old, Kris was devastated when Mary Jo moved her and sister Karen out of their palatial white house after their dad left. In retrospect, Kris could see her motherâs wisdom in letting their dream house go. While it seemed purely a financial decision to her at the time, Kris could now look back with a mature appreciation. Her mother had freed up space for something else to come into her life; namely, her stepdad, Harry Shannon.
Kris could no more create a life with Bruce in the house she shared with Robert than she could have settled down at Robertâs bachelor digs years previously. Also, between Bruceâs brood and the Kardashian kids, the body count was ten. They needed more room for their blended family. Malibu was an expensive community, so finding an affordable home that was spacious enough to meet their needs was challenging. But Kris persevered. She was prepared for the possibility that it might not have all the bells and whistles she enjoyed during her life at Tower Lane. All Kris needed for inspiration was Bruceâs love.
After a long financial drought, Kris finally had some money coming in. She decided to use a portion of her divorce settlementâwhich included $5,000 a month in child supportâto rent a property in Malibu. On a Sunday afternoon in March 1991, she and Bruce drove around looking at properties. Kris frequently added items to the notepad of her âto doâ list. She had numerous assignments awaiting her execution. As soon as they found a house, she had to move four children and their menagerie of pets. In addition, she needed to organize Bruceâs exit from his dreary bungalow. Nothing got Kris Kardashianâs juices flowing like a new project. She could hardly wait to dive into all the mess of unlabeled files Bruce had stashed in cardboard boxes. She wondered how much money he had lost by not attending to business.
Bruce never forgot the first time Kris visited his place.
âShe stepped inside and saw the dishes in the sink and the old clothes on the rod and the tiny, dried-out Christmas tree beside the front door as my homeâs only source of decoration. She asked me what Iâd done during the holidays. I told her I just stayed home and had a cup of coffee.â
âWhereâs your gold medal?â Kris asked, quietly surveying the living room.
âItâs over here,â he said, motioning for her to follow him to the set of bureau drawers by his bed.
Kris stopped behind him and cocked her head to peer over his right shoulder as he opened a drawer full of socks. Kris just smiled, making no comments about what an odd burial place it was for such a prestigious award. Bruce reached to the bottom of the pile and pulled out a small, square box.
