I woke up in my room and looked around. For a moment I lay on top of my bed covers, trying to decide whether anyone was watching.

When I was sure no one was watching, I laughed out loud.

Tal was far too sure of himself.

He was right about one thing, though. I must be descended from Ares, or he must have been more exhausted than he thought, because whatever spell he used to wipe my memories hadn’t really worked. There were false memories he had no doubt set up so I wouldn’t be conscious of having lost the afternoon, but they were like nighttime shadows fading at dawn. In a few minutes they were gone, but my real memories were still vivid and complete in every detail.

I knew that Tal and the others had written me off. Oh, they were happy enough to use my idea to save themselves, but evidently even that wasn’t enough to make them think of me as a friend. Well, so be it! They weren’t the only game in town, and now I knew it.

I got up, found my backpack, and rummaged around in it a little. It didn’t take me long to find my copy of the Iliad.
