When the equipment is judged to be repairable, the minimal repair policy will be implemented. This repair policy stipulates equipment repair and replacement time. Under this policy, the equipment is suggested to be replaced after certain hours. If the equipment fails before certain hours, it will be recovered with the least repairs and cost compared to preventive replacement.

7.5.2.2: Condition-based maintenance

CBM is a modern and popular maintenance technique widely discussed in the literature. CBM is based on a theory that 99% of equipment will show some warning signs, conditions, or indications before it fails (Bloch & Geitner, 2012). In CBM, the service life of a piece of equipment can be predicted and controlled by monitoring its operating status, such as vibration, temperature, lubricating oil, pollutants or noise levels, etc. The core of CBM is continuous, real-time condition monitoring (CM) using various sensors (Campos, 2009). Therefore, maintenance performs only based on requirement or before failure occurs (Andersen & Rasmussen, 1999) to decrease maintenance frequency and corresponding costs (Gupta & Lawsirirat, 2006). CM and maintenance decision-making are the two main contents of CBM.
