Maria was livid. So livid, she cursed Maddie in Spanish for about five minutes before returning to English. “Lugnut put me in charge of security. Me! This is why. You run off, share classified information, and make alliances without even consulting me?”

Beth was standing over Maddie with her hands on her hips. She was giving her that stern, “you’re in deep shit now” look like when she’d been fourteen and had taken the family car for a joy ride. Dustin and Jaxon were scratching their heads and looking to the sky like they’d just been along for the ride and knew nothing.

“Now I have to ride to Rolla myself and straighten all this out. We’ll be three short on security.” She glanced back at Dustin and Jaxon. “I hope your asses aren’t too sore to ride back to Rolla.”

Jaxon straightened and took two steps toward her. “I think you should finish listening to Maddie. The arrangement she made with Easton and Fitzsimmons is for the good of the region. It could work,” Jaxon said.

“Put the fact that she went behind your back aside and think about the plan. I think a conversation with Easton could tighten up some of the details, but it’s better than going it alone and letting Region Five roll in and take control. I hate the idea of bugging out and leaving all we’ve worked for here,” Dustin said.

Maria shook her head. “Lugnut is going to be so pissed, no two ways about it. He told us to keep close to home and bug out at the first sign of trouble. Now, you’ve committed us to something that makes it impossible for us to do that.”

Maddie stood. “Lugnut isn’t here, but if he were, he would have come up with something to save our home.” She understood why he’d given that order. He didn’t believe they could fight an army of Region Five troops. She didn’t either, not alone. He may or may not have reached out as she did but her dad would have—she was sure of it. He’d dragged her up and down every back road in Texas and the surrounding counties making friends—friends that could become partners in a situation just like this. He understood that no group could make it on their own. You have to have a community and work together. That was all she was trying to accomplish. It was to everyone’s benefit that Region Five did not make headway into south-central Missouri.

“We need a group meeting. First thing in the morning, I will put it to a vote. This affects everyone. They should have a say in whether we make these alliances or bug out like Lugnut ordered,” Maria said before turning and marching away.

Maddie was fine with putting it to a vote. That was how they’d operated for the first eight or so months of this crisis. Everyone had had a say. Maddie was convinced that once she presented her side and her reasoning, the others would see the wisdom of her plan.
