SITTING AT A TABLE in the restaurant’s corner, staring blankly over a glass of tonic water, Kohotina mentally reviewed his plan. From his spot, he could see his target across the crowded outdoor café. He’d make the deal, get the software and give her the money. He’d limit their chitchat to a minimum; there was no possible upside to lingering. As a parting gift when he left, he’d give her a .22-caliber hollowpoint round to the head.

Having done jobs like this before, killing in public didn’t faze Kohotina in the least. To him, it was all about confidence and misdirection. He knew that when properly done, a professional could pop someone in plain sight, and not one bystander would remember enough to be a good witness.

He inhaled fully through his nose, paused and slowly blew out through pursed lips. The technique was a relaxation method he had learned in prison. For the well-protected, San Quentin had been like a trade school with professionals passing the benefits of lessons to younger inmates. As Kohotina continued to breathe, waves of energy began pulsing through his body. He visualized the oxygen spreading outward from his lungs, racing into his bloodstream and down his right arm, to his hand playing over the weapon in his jacket pocket.
