“Please have a seat, Tom.”

Thayne sank onto the cushion covering the white wrought iron chair on Mills Lang’s shaded pool deck. Noah was swimming laps in the large pool, his skin golden in the sunshine, Lang’s four heavily-armed guards standing watch over the property as the noonday sun beat down.

“What can I do for you, sir?”

“Isn’t he beautiful?” Lang asked, gazing over at where Noah had rolled over to float on his back, his eyes closed, looking innocent and carefree. “So fragile, like an angel.”

Thayne wasn’t sure he was actually supposed to answer. Lang was the boss and Thayne had seen him ask rhetorical questions of his subordinates before. It was one of his favorite things to do. Thayne figured that most of the time, Lang was only asking out loud as he pondered a question, not because he really gave a damn what anyone thought. He decided to remain silent. Lang looked over.

“You must tell me your opinion about Noah, Tom,” Lang drawled. “I’m certain you have one.”

Of course he had an opinion. In Thayne’s opinion, he was shocked that Noah was still at the compound after three months. He was shocked that Lang hadn’t kicked the boy out of the house with a wad of cash for the Madam the next morning, regardless of how Lang had enjoyed him. Now, whether it made sense to share his opinions with Lang… that was the question. Thayne realized how dangerous Lang was and everything he said and did had purpose. So, what was up with him being summoned to speak to Lang about his young lover?

There must be something more about Noah that appealed to Lang than just a bedmate. Noah’s appeal had certainly been apparent to Thayne and the night they’d met and gone to bed together at Noah’s urgent begging, had left Thayne with a sweet memory. And he’d had the overwhelming urge to protect the boy from Mills Lang when he’d come in the next morning to claim him for himself. Letting him go, in order to keep his cover, had been one of the hardest things Thayne had done. Even after all these months, though, he still watched Noah closely, convincing himself that he would step in if the boy appeared to be physically abused in any way.

“My opinion, sir? I think he’s very beautiful,” Thayne answered, concerned he was even being asked. Lang had claimed Noah as his own the very next day so Thayne was somewhat mystified as to why he was curious how he felt after all this time.

“He is. He says he loves me and I am tempted to believe him,” Lang said.

Thayne noted how closely he observed Thayne’s reactions. He knew Lang would construe whatever he said into what he wanted to hear and for the first time since he’d been at the compound, he wondered whether he was about to get a bullet in his head. He didn’t think Mills Lang was capable of love in any way shape or form.
