Chapter Twenty-One

Dennis Marsh worked in the Edward Building in the Denver Tech Center, an imposing, fifteen-story office structure with black reflective windows off Belleview Avenue and I-25. I exited the highway and meandered my way through a complex maze of streets to Prentice. I parked in an underground covered garage and walked into the building, then around a corner to the lobby. Pitzker Accounting was on the fifth floor, and I took the elevator. I walked through glass doors and was greeted by a young woman with a perky smile. I asked to speak to Dennis’s supervisor, and she shook her head.

“I’ll just get Dennis for you,” she said pleasantly, not seeming to notice my badge. Before I could say anything, she picked up a desk phone and made a quick call. When she hung up, she pointed to chairs near the door. “He said he has to make a phone call, and then he’ll be up.”

I thanked her and sat in one of the chairs. I perused a magazine and was just picking up another when a man with brown hair and brown eyes walked into the lobby. He was clean-shaven and good-looking, but not strikingly so, just as Amy’s friend Jenna Ordway had said. He might find that insulting, but he looked like a lot of other men.

I stood as he walked up to me. “I’m Dennis Marsh.” He reached out a hand. “What can I help you with?”

I smiled. “I’m Detective Sarah Spillman with Denver Homicide. I’m following up on an investigation, and I wonder if I could take a few minutes of your time?”

His smile vanished, replaced by an uneasy look. He glanced to the receptionist, and she was looking at both of us.

“Sure,” he said. “Why don’t you come to my office.”

He spun around, his back stiff. I followed him down a hallway and around the corner to an office with windows that faced a parking lot. He sat down at his desk and I took a seat across from him. He ran a hand over his dark slacks, then adjusted his shirtsleeve. He sat back uneasily in his chair and looked at me. Then he held up his hands.

“What can I help you with?”

I glanced around the office, a half-shelf against the wall, the pictures on his desk. A trace of his cologne in the air. “I hope I’m not catching you at an inconvenient time.”

He shook his head. “I have a few minutes.”

“I appreciate that. Do you know a woman named Amy Babbitt?”

He nodded. “Yes, I met her last Sunday night. I can’t say that I know her very well. We only spent a night together. What’s this about?”

“Amy is dead.” I watched his reaction.

His face scrunched up. “Oh my God. What happened?”

“We’re trying to determine the exact circumstances of her death, and we have to look into everything.”

“Gosh, that’s terrible.” He glanced out the window. “She seemed … I’d only seen her that night. This is just so weird.”

I stared him down. “Are you married?”

He shook his head.
