Chapter 13
I stood by my workstation, staring forlornly at my ruined, smoking cupcakes. Iâd gotten distracted talking to Dave, and Iâd forgotten about them. There was nothing I could do to save them. Even cutting off the burnt bits wouldnât be enough to salvage these disasters.
Elwin patted my shoulder. âDonât worry. Your involvement in the contest was only for fun. We figured it might up the finalistsâ game when they saw you hard at work. Itâs such a shame to see these delicious cakes ruined.â
Henriette walked over and joined us. Her nose wrinkled as she stared at my cakes. âDid the oven malfunction?â
âIt was my fault. I wasnât paying attention. I put the cupcakes in the oven and then got talking to the crew.â
âIâll have a word with them,â Henriette said. âThey shouldnât be bothering judges. Theyâre here to work, not distract you. Who was it?â
âNo, I went to talk to them. This isnât their fault.â
âDidnât you get the feeling?â Elwin said.
I glanced at him and shook my head. I knew what he meant, but I never got the feeling. Not once. Uncle Albert often talked about it, how he would put something in the oven, be serving at the counter, and have to dash away when his cakes magically informed him they were ready to come out. The only feeling I got when I looked at my baked goods was intense disappointment and lingering failure.
âEveryone can get distracted.â Elwinâs smile was reassuring. âI remember in my first year of advanced bakery skills, I once turned a cake bright green. I had to pretend it was vegetable inspired.â
I forced myself to chuckle along with them, but I was mortified. And when I looked closely at the cupcakes, they looked lumpy as well as charred. Maybe Bramâs magic wasnât good when it came to creating baked goods.
âIâm embarrassed by mine, too. Wait here. Iâll show you what Iâve created.â Henriette dashed off and returned with an amazing plate of pale yellow cupcakes topped with tiny iced flowers. âArenât they just awful?â
âThey look good to me,â I said.
âYouâre too kind. I might have another go, see if I can do better.â Henriette took a look at my cakes again and shook her head. âMaybe you should, too.â
The last thing I wanted to do was make even more terrible cupcakes. âIâll deal with these first.â
âDonât look so sad,â Elwin said. âEven the best of the best needs a learning experience. This is yours. And I can guarantee you wonât get distracted again.â
I gave him my best smile. I could guarantee I would. Baking didnât make my heart sing. It simply made it want to take a long vacation somewhere hot, where I didnât have to lift a finger when it came to making the desserts.
Elwin checked the time and clapped his hands together. âEveryone, itâs time to stop baking. Weâve done enough filming for the day.â
There were several relieved groans from the camera crew around us.
âStore your cakes away, and tomorrow youâll decorate them.
