Chapter 16

Officer Torrance slammed the cell door in my face, a grin pulling his mouth wide. “You’re going to be in lockdown for the rest of the day without food.” He whispered a magic word to keep me confined in my cell.

Like I could handle food after the hell that fairy, druid bitch tossed me into.

Before the daemon guard dragged me away from the high-security cell, another C.O. arrived to retrieve Natasha who remained conscious after the beating I gave her. Officer Torrance stopped by the infirmary to get my wrist bandaged, and only then did he remove the iron cuffs. He claimed it was for the safety of the few inmates laid out on cots in the medical ward.

A shiver racked my body at the memory of the iron. I still felt like crap. That might have something more to do with the hallucinations than the weakness from the metal.

“Kimber will be staying elsewhere tonight to keep you in solitary.” The daemon’s emerald gaze traced over the bare bedframes as he ran his hand over his crewcut. “I guess you’ll be sitting on the floor. What a shame.” He sauntered away while his chuckle bounced through the corridor.

With a shaky breath, I folded onto the concrete floor and leaned against the cold wall. I’d rather be locked in my cell and away from everyone else, especially that asshole Viktor.

A tear slid down my cheek before I angrily wiped it away. Nothing went on in this prison without the unseelie prince knowing about it. Did he have his hands in this, too?

Exhaustion weighed heavily on me and being bound by the iron didn’t help. Mixon, the doctor, said exposing my open wounds to the metal made the reaction even worse. The poison had seeped into my bloodstream, and I could experience slight weakness for a couple days.

No wonder I’d managed to fall asleep for a few hours huddled against my cell wall. When I woke from the fitful nap, even more tired, I crawled toward my drawer and grabbed a shirt and a pair of pants, bundling them to make a pillow. The cold, dirty floor sank through my clothes and chilled me to the bone.

A lump lodged in my throat as I thought of my sister. At least she had a nice bed—for now—and if I got the chance, I’d make sure she never found herself on the hard cement floor of a prison cell.

That unmistakable presence of the unseelie prince drew closer, and blood began to race through my veins. I choked back the tears on the verge of falling before he saw the weakness.

Just great. Like I really needed a visit from him right now.

His intimidating form materialized within the shadows in front of my cell door, his eyes like twin shards of ice ready to stab my chest.

“Come to gloat?” I mumbled, my energy so drained it was hard to find the rage always simmering below the surface.

His powerful fingers wrapped around the bars. “How does
