CHAPTER EIGHT

SOL

Mother had immediately shut down our plans to mess with the hyenas, making sure I understood that I absolutely couldn’t interfere with the investigation in the village.

Now, though, I was practically crawling out of my skin watching everyone fake-welcome these two-faced hyenas to our territory. Lions shouldn’t be pandering to such a group.

“Come on, man,” Jack prodded, gesturing in mimic of my pacing. “Let’s go sniff around the jaguar village instead. Or I can fly you up to the dragons if Jazira vetoes that.”

“Yeah. Yeah, let’s get out of here,” I agreed, glaring at the inside of Lata’s hut. I needed some air anyways. Mother hadn’t banned us from walking around. We’d just walk near the jungle.

Maybe we could suss out a clue that had been missed. At the very least, I wouldn’t have to watch Mother and Lata play nice with these assholes.

“Shit, lion. You’ve got no chill - you’re like a wet kitty-cat,” Jack said, chuckling as we headed past the village limits. I snorted, running my hands through my hair and trying to fasten it back in a loose bun. Carlyle liked it longer, so I had been avoiding a trim for a lot longer than usual.

I sighed and glanced at Jack. “You’re not wrong, dragon. It just pisses me off so much that these hyenas think they should have any influence at all. Fucking fear tactic, that’s all it is.”

Jack nodded. “So, to clear your pride, we need to find the twins and get a confession, or find a witness, right?”

I nodded. “Those twins are long gone,” I said, sighing.

“Maybe. But I bet they’re closer than you think. I mean, what about the motive? Why attack Carlyle if they weren’t going to use her power? Why kill their adopted dad if they weren’t trying to take over the jaguars? They either have followers, someone pulling their strings, or most likely, it’s a bit of both.”

I gave Jack the side-eye as we climbed the hill leaving the valley area of my village. He had a lot of good points. “Probably both,” I agreed. Those twins hadn’t seemed like upper management material. “But we don’t know which direction to look in for their boss. So we should check out that lead Lata has on the hidden jaguars - they’re either friendly or they’ll lead us straight to the twins.”

“There you go - big brain,” Jack teased, cuffing me on the arm. “You know, ever since Carlyle’s lion magic got all stirred up, you’ve been acting different, too.”

I groaned. “What the fuck, dragon? Is this your version of an intervention?”

Jack held up his hands like he meant no harm, and I knew he didn’t. He wasn’t wrong, though. It felt like I’d been challenged, measured, and fallen short.

“Is it possible they messed with your magic, too? Through the mating bond?” he asked.

“Messed with my head, more like it,” I grumbled. I hadn’t felt physically weaker, just like I was fighting with one hand tied. “Let’s head to the site of the jaguar camp and see if we can find some clues.
