Spot

Standing on the edge of the roof, I stared down at the sidewalk three stories below through stinging eyes. Everything and everyone looked so small when I was up here, and I crouched down on the ledge to prop my forearms on my knees. The lights twinkled despite the fact that the sun hadn’t set, yet, and the city glowed gold as the day wound down.

But my mind was shadowed, unable to really appreciate the light as my mind’s eye played on a loop. Even Aaron… even this wonderful man that really seemed to like me… even he, the first and thus far only man that tried…

Pulling my cigarette butt to my lips, I inhaled as much of the toxic smoke as I could. The one thing I wanted, he couldn’t give me, and if he couldn’t, who can?

“Fuck.” Exhaling the smoke through my nose into the dead, still air, my slur disappeared under the sound of cars whizzing by far below. I needed to get my fucking act together somehow- I knew that, I acknowledged that, but I had no idea how to achieve it.

Men get hung up on me, not the other fucking way around, God damnit.

The familiar rip of an engine tore my attention from the sky, and I glanced down as Anthony’s familiar bike turned into the parking lot. Frowning deeply, I couldn’t help my scoff as ugly annoyance stained my chest, and I waited for him to climb out of the saddle. When he took off his helmet, I flicked my half-smoked cigarette at him, and keen, smart eyes swung up to lock onto my form.

Hopefully, Anthony was here to apologize for screaming at me- or I might really punch him in his stupid face.

Twisting to sit on the ledge, I snatched my pack to thumb out a new cigarette, and Anthony must’ve run up the stairs judging by how fast he pushed open the door. Sparking my smoke, I took a hard drag, and he shot me a guilty, almost sheepish look as he neared.

“Hey, Spot. So… I owe you an apology.” My eyes narrowed as he crouched down against the low wall next to me, and I exhaled through flared nostrils. Clapping his hands together, Anthony leaned against the concrete barrier to sigh heavily. “I’m sorry about the other morning. I jumped the gun about your girls.”

His apology wasn’t fantastic or flourished with pretty words, but I nodded anyway; it took a lot for Anthony to admit he was wrong.

“I accept. So, what’s up with that? How would you even know the FBI is investigating you? Why the FBI, too, and not, like, the IRS or something?” Taking this distraction for all it was worth, I scooted down to sit against the wall rather than on it, and Anthony groaned as he flopped his head back. He reached to rub his face in frustration, and I took a drag of my cigarette as I waited for an answer.

“Like I said- I got a letter to the clinic stating that I was under investigation for insurance fraud.
