* One frustrated MP snapped: ‘There’s no point Starmer trying to convince people that humanitarian pauses are the answer when he will literally be arguing for a new position as soon as [President] Biden and [Prime Minister] Sunak announce one’. Sure enough, just a month and a half later, in line with changing rhetoric from the US, first Prime Minister Sunak and then Starmer began to advocate a ‘sustainable ceasefire’ (although not an immediate one). In late February 2024 Starmer moved again, calling for an ‘immediate humanitarian ceasefire’ (with numerous caveats). The timing of this last shift may have been brought forward by the threat of a parliamentary rebellion in Labour ranks but synchronicity was soon restored when, on March 4, US vice president Kamala Harris called for ‘an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks’. Israel was not put under pressure to heed these calls and therefore ignored them. Post by @ShehabKhan on X (3 November 2023), https://x.com/ShehabKhan/status/1720464647948468686 (‘follow’). * Across the electorate Labour gained six percentage points in the 2024 election relative to 2019. But among voters who said they sympathised ‘much more’ with Palestinians than with Israelis, support for Labour fell by eighteen points. In the twenty-one constituencies where Muslims comprised over 30 percent of the population, Labour’s vote share dropped by twenty-nine points. ‘Starmer’s Palestine Problem’, The Economist (30 July 2025).

* As reported in The Times of Israel: ‘According to foreign reports, the Nevatim Airbase in the south of Israel was one of the primary targets, with up to 32 hits identified in the base’s open areas, structures, and surrounding fields. These details were revealed in satellite images and were not denied by the IDF in foreign media reports. The IDF has stressed that no fighter jets were damaged in that attack. Overseas experts noted two additional strikes near Mossad headquarters in the Glilot Junction area north of Tel Aviv and about three possible hits on structures inside the Tel Nof Airbase, near the city of Rehovot. An additional strike, on a restaurant in the “Sea and Sun” complex in northern Tel Aviv, may also have been an attempt to hit the Mossad headquarters, while a strike on a school in Gedera may have been part of the attempt to target the Tel Nof Airbase. The foreign media analysis of the strikes near the Mossad HQ and Tel Nof base is based on video footage posted on social media. Some videos show the size and depth of a crater left by a ballistic missile, while others captured from afar document the shock waves, fire, and smoke
