It felt like this enormous weight had been lifted off her shoulders the second the word left her lips. It didn’t feel weird saying it. It felt natural. Like she’d waited her whole life, and here she was. Finally.

Laney studied her for a minute. “You’re serious.”

“It took me this long to figure out. I thought it was because I just wasn’t attracted to James anymore, but I understood that it wasn’t James. It was guys in general.”

“Hmm.” Laney nodded thoughtfully. “And you’re sure?”

“Yeah, last night kind of sealed the deal for me.”

“Because of what James said?”

“No, um.” Milah blushed. “Because of something else.”

“Why are you blushing? Milah, did you go out and make out with some random hot woman?”

“It was not a random hot woman,” Milah responded, defensively. “It was someone I know.”

“Okay, I don’t want to sound like a jerk for asking this, but I am curious, so is it okay if I ask a few questions? Feel free to tell me I’m being sexist or racist or whatever if I am, okay?”

Milah laughed. “Sure, Laney. Shoot.”

“It’s not a phase, right? I know some people like to experiment, and then they go back to normal.”

“No, it’s not a phase. I did the experimental thing when I was in college. I dated a few guys, and then once I started dating James, we had a huge fight and broke up, so I decided to give it a shot.”

Laney’s face lit up with curiosity. “And how did it feel? If you don’t mind my asking.”

“It was strange at first. I couldn’t quite believe I was kissing another woman, and I thought it was just part of a rebellious phase, so I expected not to like it. A lot of people I knew didn’t, so imagine my surprise when I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.”

“Must’ve been quite a shock for you,” Laney quipped.

“It was at the time, but again I chalked it up to too much drinking, and trying to lash out at societal norms.”

“I can understand that. So, what happened yesterday?”

Milah closed her eyes. “I knew I screwed up, and I shouldn’t have done it because we work together, and it won’t happen again, but I made out with Lyanna.”

“Lyanna, our informant, Lyanna Smith?”

Milah’s eyes flew open, the guilt and conflict written within them. “The one and only.”

Laney whistled. “Damn girl, what have you gotten yourself into?”

“I have no idea.”
