The energy at the office was different when Cole arrived. Everyone he passed in the hall brought with them an air of tension he didn’t expect, even for a Monday morning. Conversations stopped the moment he came into sight, and whispers followed him as he left. He should have expected that, he supposed; while he had been checking in with the office all last week, it was his first time actually coming in since Zoe’s kidnapping and rescue. There were bound to be rumors and speculation on what had happened.

He went into his office and fired up his computer. Cole had tried his best to keep up with it while he was off, but as the head of manufacturing operations in North America, he received hundreds of emails a day. Most were just courtesy updates or people adding him because they thought it would make the recipient respond faster. Scanning the most recent items in his inbox for anything that he would actually have to respond to, he saw nothing pressing, though Green Tech had been mentioned in several emails over the last few days, more than he had seen it mentioned in the last year. Green Tech was his father’s passion project, and he maintained oversight of the lab. It had worked out well when Zoe started working there. She had almost refused to even interview for the job because she was dating Cole. The only reason she had agreed to it was on the condition that Cole had nothing to do with the operation of the lab.

They had an informal meeting every Monday morning to make sure they were both up to speed on what was happening across the company. As head of communications, Jackson needed to be made aware of any potential issues in their manufacturing operations that could result in a media frenzy.

Jackson was on the phone when Cole arrived, and waved him in without breaking stride. Cole set Jackson’s coffee on the desk before taking a seat.

“It’s like I told you the last time you called, Ms. Antos is not available for comment. If the situation changes, I’ll let you know.” Jackson shook his head and hung up. “Sorry about that.” He grabbed the coffee and took a sip.

“How many interview requests does that make now?” Cole asked. They’d started about an hour after she was rescued and hadn’t let up much since. Jackson was handling it all personally even though it wasn’t technically business-related.

“Too many to count. Are you sure she isn’t willing to go on camera and make a statement about the kidnapping? It would certainly make my job easier.”

“Sorry, she’s made it very clear she doesn’t want to talk to the press.” Cole hadn’t actually told Zoe about the interview requests, but they had discussed her giving press releases before, and she always shut them down right away. He
