Chapter 37

Tonight meant the invitation to dine with the Western Times owners and Hogmyre at Scarps Restaurant beside the Swan River. Francis had told Ewen to arrive early so he and his protégé could sit with their backs to the river, allowing the owners the water view. Always consider the finer details when inviting people to dinner, Francis had said. If a guest felt lost for conversation, they could always take the river in for a few seconds and not feel self-conscious within a quiet spell.

The water view was impressive, thought Ewen as he followed the maître d’ to Hogmyre seated in the al fresco area on the riverbank. Cool river air had turned summer into autumn. Yellow and purple lights installed in the watercourse changed colour every thirty seconds. A nice touch, but not as striking as the two couples seated at the table next to Francis. My god, rich chicks look hot, Ewen concluded. One girl facing the river looked so stunning he found it difficult not to stare. Her shoulder-length, straight brown hair shimmered when she laughed. A thin-lipped smile offered a hint of mischief to an otherwise elegant face. A light-blue, shoulder-strapped dress hanging loosely over Mediterranean skin, framed a blue sapphire pendant hovering above her cleavage. Sapphire earrings matched her blue eyes. Electric. And roughly his age.

She caught him staring, held his gaze for a second, and casually turned back to her companions’ conversation.

Within a minute, her attention waned. This time, she spied him.
