Chapter 61

Sharla Lee and Gerard were always happy to see me. The Christmas tree exhibit was up and they were expecting a great crowd because of all the people attending the church tour.

Sharla Lee was eager to help me check things off my gift list. The gift shop always had more merchandise this time of year, which I loved. I put her in charge of collecting things for Charmin’s gift basket and she cheerfully reminded me to bring Charmin by so she could tour the museum.

“Kate, those charity families sure were grateful for all their Christmas gifts!” Gerard shared.

“I would have loved to have seen their faces,” I replied. “I’m so happy the effort is expanding.”

The beautifully decorated Christmas trees drew me into the large gallery. I took my time and enjoyed each colorful tree! I was also curious as to how folks were responding when they came upon my feather tree. When I approached it, Frieda, a member of our quilting group, was standing right in front of it.

“Hello, Frieda!” I said, catching her by surprise.

“Why, Kate. I was just looking at your feather tree. This really brings back memories!”

“Did you use to have one?”

She nodded. “There was one in our family. It eventually got too tattered to display it anymore. I think we had some of these same ornaments!”

“I was hoping the tree would get this kind of reaction.” I paused before asking her my next question. “Frieda, what do you make of this missing quilt situation?”

She wouldn’t look at me. “It’s a shame. I never did think we should take people’s quilts to be quilted until it was time for us to quilt them. Goodness knows how many items Ruby has at her house for us to quilt!”

“You make a good point.”

She now looked at me and said, “I remember when Stella Clifton brought that top to us. It was over a year ago. She was very precise about how she wanted it quilted. Ruby didn’t agree with her, of course.”

“Do you think anyone saw Ruby put that quilt top back in the quilt box?”

“I doubt it. She always gets there earlier than the rest of us.”

“The janitor said there were originally two keys.”

She paused to think. “Now that you say it, I was there when Timmy Petzoldt delivered that storage box to us. He handed one key to Ruby and one to Matilda to give to the pastor.”

“Are you saying the pastor should have the second key?”

“Well, he wasn’t there that day. Then Matilda gave the key to Arnie who was supposed to give it to the pastor. He was there helping Timmy. Well, Kate, I need to get going. Nice running into you. I certainly enjoyed seeing your tree.”

Glancing at the time, I headed to the counter to pay my bill. It was a shocker, but I couldn’t think of a better place to spend my money!

“Thank you so much, Kate,” Sharla Lee gushed. “Gerard will help you out to the car with these things.
