Johnny and Missy

Silo 1000

Johnny Davis took a shot of moonshine before wiping his mouth. The smell of grease on his fingers temporary extinguished the scent of hard liquor. He liked the smell of grease, liked working with his hands. Fixing generators was easy. They worked a certain way, you fixed them a certain way. Simple.

His girlfriend Missy Helena wanted him to work IT. She’d even talked her mayor father into moving him up there. What did he know about computers? There were too many variables—hardware problems, software problems, electrical problems, wire problems, server problems, people problems. Problems. Problems. Problems. Not simple.

After he fried a server, they were only too happy to let him go back down where he belonged. Mechanics was a nice career. He worked his shift, had a drink and a laugh, and then went home. The only thing missing from the picture was a wife. Missy refused to marry a mechanic and live in the bottom levels of the silo. She thought it was beneath her. “Crawling in silo filth,” she’d called it.

Funny, she never minded getting a little dirty when he used to pull her into the planter’s tool shed for a quick romp—her naked ass pressed against the gardening table covered in dirt. Or when she got on her knees in the mids’ bathroom. Or when he bent her over the table in her condo home when the mayor was gone. They’d laughed between themselves as she told him of the silo’s top politicians eating off that very same table.

“Mayor must have a new one,” Rick said, slapping his hand flat against the rough table where Herbert peddled his illegal wares. No one in the down-deep cared about the moonshine laws. Those who passed them stayed up in their condos and left them alone. “I didn’t recognize this secretary, but the extension was his office.” He clapped his hand over Johnny’s shoulder, leaving a plastic elevator pass on the bar. “Sorry, friend, but you’ve been summoned to the upper mids. They’re complaining about a small generator making noise and requested you by name. I told them you just got off a shift, but they don’t care. The toppers never care about us in the pits. It’s always what they want when they want it. So, up you go.”

Johnny took the elevator pass and fingered it, not letting his smile show.

“You want me to delay so you can get cleaned up first?” Rick asked. “I’ll say I had trouble tracking you down.”

“No need,” Johnny laughed. “They’ll send me back faster if I look like this.”

Those who had heard the joke laughed and nodded. None of them liked going up. Well, none but Johnny. He knew what this pass meant. A call from the mayor’s office could only mean one thing—Missy was tired of being clean and wanted him to get her dirty again.
