Rulik

There were many things about humans that Rulik couldn’t quite wrap his head around. Their penchant for self-destruction, for example. Their seemingly endless need for things that they cannot afford. Their weird and totally unnecessary love for celebrity gossip. Many, many things.

But one that always surprised him was their incredible ability to inflict verbal harm with remarkable precision. It was like they were all sharp-shooting assassins with hurtful words. And Seph had just proved herself to be an all-time champ at that particular skill set, that was for sure.

He stared after her as she marched away from him. He was happy to see her go and to get a little distance between them. He was afraid he would lose his temper even further if this kept going the way it had been.

It’s also possible that he was afraid to get taken to task by Seph again. She was cutting a little too close to home for his comfort. He knew that for damn sure.

Rulik stomped back to the pilot’s chair and sat down, fuming and trying to get his emotions under control. Her ability to hit him on the mark was rattling him, and he needed to let it go.

She didn’t understand. That was the long and the short of it. And as hurt and as angry as he was, he couldn’t… well… just leave her out here in space (as much as some part of him may want to at the moment.)

In fact, the truth was he was going to need to find somewhere to land… and soon. They were going to need to resupply, or there would be much larger problems than hurt feelings.

Rulik turned his attention to the long-range scanners on the pod, taking some controlled breaths to get himself focused again. He set them to their maximum reach, hoping that they would find some place inhabitable for a little while at least.

As the fates would have it, he wouldn’t have to wait too long before he got a hit.

On the edge of his navigation panel, there was a beeping orange dot. That meant there was a world there with animal and vegetable life. He tried clarifying the readout, but for some reason, the lifeforms registrations kept coming up as “animal-vegetable,” as if it was one word.

Odd.

No amount of adjusting on the dials and sensors changed it. It must be some kind of a glitch, Rulik thought.

Regardless, it was a port in a storm. He plotted a course for the planet and steered the pod in that direction at maximum speed. The sooner they got there, the better. Rulik was purposely not looking at the supplies readout. He didn’t want to know how little left there was.

Regardless of the readings, there seemed to be more than enough organic material on the planet to manufacture both food and fuel… for a while anyway. Couldn’t get there soon enough.

“Strap in back there,” Rulik said with a tone that he hoped wasn’t as harsh as he feared it was. “We are on an intercept course with a planet that should be able to help us out.
