In this conversation piece by Arthur Devis depicting John Orde, his family and servant, a collection of blue and white Chinese porcelain has pride of place on the mantelpiece.

The manufacture of soft-paste porcelain in Britain began in London at the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, which had begun production by 1745, and at the New Canton Works in Bow c.1747. Production at Bow ceased in 1776, while production at Chelsea continued until the works and workers were transferred to Derby in 1780. Both of these works produced wares in rococo and Chinoiserie styles. Some porcelain factories, such as Worcester and Derby, became household names, but there were other short-lived eighteenth-century works at Vauxhall in London, Caughley (Shropshire), in Lowestoft (Suffolk), and the Richard Chaffers factory in Liverpool, which served an export market to America and the West Indies.
