Adelaide Greyne wasn’t hard to find on the internet. Her kennel name was ChiAdelaide, and it was located in Oxnard.

Which was why I headed that direction first thing the next morning, after my usual visit to HotRescues.

I drove alone, not wanting to bring even Zoey along. Oxnard was an hour or so away, but I hoped to make this a short escapade.

I’d talked the situation over with Brooke first, though.

I also talked it over at dinner last night with Matt Kingston, the guy I was dating. He was a captain in Los Angeles Animal Services, supervising the Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team.

He was an excellent person to know for rescuing animals, especially those who were in the public system and slated to be put down for lack of room. He kept me informed, and I saved as many as I could at HotRescues, also notifying people I knew at other shelters, primarily through the Southern California Rescuers organization to which I belonged.

He was also good looking, sexy... and overprotective. He didn’t want me involved with trying to clear Brittany of this murder.

He’d told me to back off in situations where I’d tried to help other murder suspects, too. I considered him sweet, but that didn’t compel me to listen to him.

Now, as I drove, I rehashed the conversations I’d had with Brooke and Matt. Brittany was the more obvious suspect than Adelaide, even though she didn’t have a relationship with Tyson Greyne other than as an angry neighbor.

But she had lived physically closer to Greyne. Had argued with him recently.

I needed to know the last time Adelaide had talked to her ex and how that situation had gone.

So, for now, I intended not to tell her my relationship with the pet rescue community--unless her kennel was poorly kept and her dogs were in trouble.

I used GPS to find her place, a small house with a lot of fenced-in land around it outside of town. I’d called ahead. I was coming because I was a Chihuahua lover. True. And as someone who was interested in adopting one that Adelaide had bred. False.

I drove up the driveway and parked in front of the old-fashioned looking ranch house--low and rustic. An odd place to raise small dogs? Maybe not, as long as they were well cared for.

I heard a loud chorus of shrill barks and yaps when I walked up the two steps onto the porch and rang the doorbell. It was answered quickly by a small woman who held three tiny and furry dogs in her arms.

“Hi, Lauren,” she said. “Come on in.”

She explained that the dogs she held were long-haired Chihuahuas, including Ellna, mother to her latest litter and a champion of multiple shows. Showing me into a large room with a pen in the center filled with Chihuahuas, she waved me to a couch.

“Just watch them for a little while. I’m sure a few will catch your attention more than the others. Then we’ll take them out and you can get to know them better.
