Lightning woke and stood on the bed, stretching and yawning, paws flexing, his claws coming in and out.

Etu wasn’t in the bed with him, so he leapt down and wandered into the other rooms. The biggest room was empty, and so was the little kitchen. Frowning, he called out for his Etu, nose going up as he tried to scent his man.

Be at ease, bear, he heard. I found a job chopping things.

But Lightning could not smell Etu.

He went back over what he had heard. Job. Chopping things. Trees? Was Etu chopping trees? Why would Etu be chopping trees?

He pushed the door open with his nose and headed out.

He would find Etu.

Etu was not outside, but others were and they greeted him, happy to see him. This was a good place and the men here were not nasty and mean. He didn’t lick anyone, but he lowered his head and allowed one or two to pet him.

Never for very long, though. He needed to find his Etu who was chopping.

He headed for the woods. Where else would Etu be chopping?

A huge demon came around a corner before he got to the woods, black horns curved over his head. This was Zee.

Etu had told him the big demon was mates with the dragon who owned the land. Lightning thought a dragon would be a very fine thing -- he wasn’t if demons were fine things, though.

“Lightning. Are you well?” Zee asked him.

He rocked his head from side to side. He was fine. He just needed Etu.

“Excellent. There is a fire in the main room or a fire pit going in the courtyard.”

No. No. His Etu was chopping. He was going to the woods to find him.

The demon continued talking like he had heard

Lightning’s thoughts. Lightning didn’t think that was possible, but it still seemed like that was what was going on. “We’re so pleased Etu has agreed to work for us. He’ll be in the kitchen now, prepping.”

The kitchen. Why would Etu be chopping trees in the kitchen? It made no sense. It also didn’t matter; if the kitchen was where Etu was, then it would also be where Lightning was. He put his head up and vocalized. Where was this kitchen?

“You have to be an employee to go in, I’m afraid. He’ll be done for the day very soon, though.”

Lightning started rocking from side to side, paws digging into the ground. He needed to see Etu.

Bear? Bear, are you well? His Etu was there, calling for him.

Etu! He went toward the voice is in his head. Etu. Etu.

I’m working, love. I have just carrots left, though. Do you want stew for supper or roast?

Etu. I want Etu. I need Etu. Why wouldn’t they let him see Etu?

Soon, bear. Soon. Can you go start a hot bath for me?

I’m tired.

A bath. In the little room with the inside toilet. It was no river, but he it was wet and it could be hot as well as cold.

Reluctantly, he turned and headed back to the cabin.
