My favourite football team and the team I was born into (you could say) is Everton FC.
You may notice my middle name - Latchford. This is not a double barrelled surname as some people think, it is actually my middle name and I was named after Bob Latchford, a very famous Everton player. So as you can imagine I was born with a blue scarf round my neck.
I used to go almost every Saturday, or whenever there was a home game, with my dad. I remember the days when there wasn’t seating all around the club and us kids used to climb onto the railings around the pitch so we could see better. My dad used to put me on his shoulders and if the team scored I would almost always fall off with the sudden surge of the crowd’s excitement at the goal.
My favourite players were Gary Lineker, Kevin Sheedy, Andy Gray and Pat van den Hauwe.
Kevin Sheedy was like the first Beckham - could bend a ball in from a free kick anywhere; Andy Gray would header the ball no matter how low it was, Gary Lineker was the gentleman’s goal hanger, a pure talent in the box but I don’t think I ever saw him booked; and Pat, or ‘Psycho Pat’ as the terrace used to call him, was a different kettle of fish - I think he forgot about the ball sometimes but the crowd loved him!
Well, I was brought up a true Blue and always will be, never forgetting the days with my father and the buzz of going to see my team on a Saturday afternoon.
Thanks and good luck with the book.
