Six months later

To outsiders, it may have seemed like Brent and Allez got engaged rather soon, but they were in love and knew otherwise. The more time they spent together, the more their feelings for each other were strengthened. Allez appreciated Brent’s openness. She felt like he was a man who’d been ready for a change in his life all along. She learned about his strengths and weaknesses as he learned about hers. Though Allez was sure there were many facets of Brent to discover, she trusted him with her heart.

She looked forward to their time together after work: evening strolls, candlelit dinners, theatre in DC, pillow talk after a lovemaking session.

Brent too trusted Allez. He’d given her the keys to his home, and introduced her to his mother and a few people he loved in his life. He would be committed to her because she was the right woman for him.

Allez was excited to marry a man like Brent, not because of his wealth, but because of who he’d shown her he was. As a boyfriend, he’d shown her that he paid attention to detail and was willing to spend time making sure she was satisfied in their relationship. Though his proposal had been a surprise, she’d heartily said yes.

How could she say no? Brent was all she could ever dream of in a man: passionate in bed and life, unselfish and generous with his love.

Time flew as they planned their wedding. Allez bubbled over with excitement and anticipation as their wedding day drew nearer. She’d picked a custom designer wedding dress with a long veil. They’d be surrounded by close friends and family, and hundreds of flowers.

“I love you” fell so easily from Brent’s lips when they woke up together in the mornings. Allez let his words sink into her bones. “I love you too,” she’d murmur. Sometimes she’d close her eyes for a moment, anticipating the many peaceful moments to come with Brent at her side. Often as she got ready in the mornings, doing something mundane like brushing her teeth or combing her hair, she marveled at how lucky she was. Brent had wondered aloud if she wanted to take time off work or become a freelance writer.

“It’d give you more flexibility for yourself and in planning the wedding,” he’d said. But Allez only shook her head.

“Nah. I want to work.”

It was one of the many topics they talked about. There was a lot to discuss before their lives joined permanently; they talked to each other daily and promised they’d always keep talking to each other. When Allez looked at Brent and listened with her heart, she believed him.
