TUESDAY OF THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22; Matthew 14:22-36

We have a wonderful moment in today’s Gospel reading. The Church remembered this incident of Jesus in the storm because it has encouraged Christians for centuries when facing any kind of difficulty to know that Jesus is with us not only when things go well but also in the storms we face.

Fear takes all kinds of forms in our life: anxiety, worry, dread, apprehension. It can be about something specific or just generally about our future or that of others. It can even paralyze a person so we cannot think of anything else or do anything else. To all of us Jesus tells us to get hold of ourselves and not be afraid. He is with us.

If we are facing a medical problem, a legal problem or a personal problem, we can either worry or trust Christ to bring unexpected good, unexpected grace, unexpected power out of the most difficult situations. He is with us even in the storm.

This account is especially important to remember because we frequently feel that the storm means that Jesus has abandoned us. Sometimes the storms in our life gather slowly and we can prepare for them. There are others that come suddenly with an accident in which a loved one is involved, a difficult medical diagnosis, a termination of employment, or the sudden loss of a friend. These are personal squalls that seen to come out of nowhere. In these storms the Lord tells us not to be afraid, to take courage because He is with us.

With Christ, we can walk on the water. Once we turn from Christ to look at the size of the waves, we get swamped. Even then, Jesus holds out His hand to us to help us manage the waves once again.

Jesus is with us in any storm. With our hand in His, we can manage the waves, whatever their size. With Christ we can manage a wall of water that may come against us. Without Christ, even a small wave can drown us. Jesus can bring us through any storm.
