More assertive.

Know your worth.

Nat paused at the door and turned. ‘I’ll help you, but please, for once, you’ll make the right choice.’

Two days later, Nat arrived to pick up Abbie from the Travelodge in Greenwich. ‘You look ill,’ Nat said. ‘Have you eaten?’

It was a depressingly dull day, the sky as grey as Abbie’s mood. Abbie lifted the cover of her compact mirror and looked at herself. Her face was white-grey – the colour of skimmed milk. ‘I feel ill,’ she said, rubbing her stinging eyes. She had slept fitfully, waking every quarter of an hour it seemed, expecting to see Tony standing over her with a knife.

Nat leaned towards Abbie, sniffing like a mouse. ‘You smell of booze.’

‘I had one last night.’

Nat tutted, shaking her head. ‘You’re pregnant.’

‘Leave it, will you.’

Nat bit her lip as she pulled out of the car park and onto the busy road, and continued biting it as she drove along the A2. Every time they stopped at a pedestrian crossing or red light, fear pounded through Abbie. It wasn’t until they were cruising in the fast lane of the M25 that her pulse dropped enough to stop the sound of her heart beating in her ears. Even so, she kept lifting the mirror cover to steal a look behind them, paranoid that Tony was on their tail. Her voice wobbled. ‘How’re the kids?’
