In his dream …

Giles was kissing Karen. He could feel the ruby red softness of her lips on his own. She removed his glasses, let them dangle at her side, and just when he began to relax, before the kiss became more than a kiss, she twined her fingers in his hair and wrapped a leg around him, pulling him close. Closer. And her lips moved down his throat to his chest, and back up once again.

Only they didn’t feel soft anymore.

There was pleasure, unlike anything he’d known. But there was pain, as well. Horrible pain. Clutching, aching pain, as though his heart had seized, his breath stolen away, his stomach tightened, about to revolt.

He was jostled awake, his head bouncing slightly on the hard metal floor of the van. For a moment, Giles’s mind was clear, the dream fresh in his memory, and he knew that he’d been used, been violated. Then his eyelids fluttered, and he descended into a haze of mental numbness that had become too familiar to him in recent days.

There were vampires all around him. That he knew. And against the rear doors, Grayhewn the demon sat facing them all, eyes glowing red in the darkness of the vehicle. The back of the van dipped toward the street; the van obviously riding too low.

“He’s awake,” said a beautiful, lilting voice.

Giles saw blond hair, and blinked, recognizing Rachel, the vampire girl who’d twice tried to engineer his abduction. Now here he was in her hands.

But alive. At least he was alive.

Twice more, the van jostled up and down, and Giles had the vague idea they were driving over speed bumps. Then the driver braked and the van pulled to a stop. Nobody moved until the two vampires up front had jumped out and come around the back to open the doors. Grayhewn stepped out—his stone flesh scraping paint off the floor of the van—and the vehicle rose several inches.

His mind grew even more muddled, though he sensed some of the vampires moving past him. Then he was staring into the ragged, empty eye socket of the one called Jocelyn.

“Out,” she ordered.

Giles tried to command his limbs to move, but they weren’t paying any attention. He felt helpless, almost frozen.

“Come on,” Jocelyn growled, and grabbed him by the hair, almost dragging him from the van that way.

“Aaagh,” Giles mumbled painfully. “Hurts.” He tried to say more, but couldn’t make his mouth obey. He felt lost, a prisoner inside his own body, his own foggy mind.

“That hurts?” Jocelyn asked harshly as she forced him out of the van, forced him to start walking across the pavement toward a large, featureless building. “How about this?”

She’d warned him. Her words told him what was coming. But as numb as he felt, Giles couldn’t even react, couldn’t get out of her way. Jocelyn kicked him in the side, and Giles went down hard on the pavement. He cringed, trying to catch his breath, his kidneys in pain, and he was grateful she hadn’t kicked higher where she might have broken some ribs.
