The following morning, Brooke heard a light rapping on her bedroom window. Violet was outside the window telling her it was time to begin her lesson. She flew downstairs and gave her mother a light kiss on the cheek. Her mother smiled.

“Be safe and I’ll see you around dinner time.” She told her.

Violet told Brooke that they would be starting with the watermelon patch. As they zoomed off to their location, Brooke was thrilled that as a fairy, she could keep up with Violet. She was excited to learn. Violet dipped a paintbrush into a bucket of clear liquid next to the watermelon patch. She began to paint the substance onto a watermelon.

“What is the point of painting that on the watermelons? There isn’t any color.” Brooke asked.

“The paint is clear because I haven’t given it a color. Observe.” Violet dabbed the paintbrush in the bucket again and finished painting the watermelon. Brooke noticed nothing unusual.

“Green.” Violet commanded, and all of the sudden, the dull green watermelon became a rich green. Brooke’s eyes widened. It was incredible magic! Violet picked up another can and handed her a brush.

“Your turn! Have fun!” With that, Violet flew over to the other side of the watermelon patch. To Brooke, the watermelons looked immense. She looked into the clear, glistening liquid and got an idea. She dabbed her brush into the paint and swirled it around. She applied it to the watermelon next to the one that Violet painted.

“Pink!” Suddenly the watermelon went from a dull green to a bright pink. She moved back and admired her handiwork. She had colored three more fuchsia when Violet startled her.

“Crickets! The watermelons are always supposed to be green! We don’t get to choose colors, we don’t want too much attention on our work here.” Violet told her.

“I’m so sorry, Violet.” Brooke told Violet. Violet shrugged and giggled. “It’s nothing we can’t remedy!”

“You can change them back to green! That’s good!” Brooke said, relieved. Violet shook her head.

“No, not exactly. I am going to have some workers take them away to process into fairy food.” Violet whistled and some fairies arrived.

“Take these for processing.” She tipped her head as if an idea had occurred to her. “Oh and take one to Mr. and Mrs. Murphy.” Brooke’s eyes widened as some of the workers carried one of her masterpieces to the house.

“Great!” Brooke muttered, and sat down on a stone. Violet tried to make her feel better.

“I did tell you to have fun, didn’t I?” Brooke smiled.

“It was fun.” They both giggled. Violet had another plan.

“Why don’t we help with some other things, okay?” Violet suggested.

“Okay.” With that, they flew off to find Marigold to get some pixie dust. They found Marigold sprinkling pixie dust on pumpkins. She carefully scooped a few handfuls of the shimmering dust from a container into two satchels. Marigold gave one to Violet and hesitantly gave one to Brooke, who promised to be careful with it.

As she flew over the barn she couldn’t help but look for Lucky.
