E04: BUSINESS TRIP

CHAPTER 1

Kaylee gradually drifted into consciousness, realizing the alarm had not yet blared. Why was she awake? Inwardly sighing, she fought to slip back into her dream. A slight movement made her aware of the hand loosely holding her hipbone. The pleasant memories of the night before drifted through her mind. Darkness started enveloping her once again, drawing her back into slumber.

Suddenly the room filled with a cacophony of sirens, dashing any hopes of more sleep. Alex stirred next to Kaylee, giving her hip a loving pat. Kaylee in turn swatted at the intruding alarm clock and snuggled back against Alex. In her half-conscious mind, she wondered how she had ever gotten along without her. They had been dating nearly six months and it seemed like life was complete now they were together.

“Come on, sleeping beauty. You know what day it is.” Career-driven ‘Alexis’ took all the joy out of Monday morning. Grunting in disapproval, Kaylee protested the disturbance. Alex leaned down and nibbled Kaylee’s neck.

“Don’t make me resort to more drastic actions, missy,” she warned.

Alex started to dress. She needed to pop home before heading into work. Kaylee threw on a simple robe and headed to the kitchen to make tea. Alex joined her and they discussed their plans for the day.

“We’ve a meeting at nine sharp, don’t be late. You know how Rose gets.”

Kaylee nodded in agreement, still pushing the fog of sleep from her mind. After a quick breakfast and a farewell kiss, Alex headed out, leaving Kaylee to get Ryan and herself ready for another Monday. The shower finally got her moving and she left soon after with Ryan in tow.

The morning commute was another humdrum of loud noises, lights, and what seemed like millions of people. At the office, Kaylee prepared her tea and went into the meeting room. Most people were already sitting around the circular table, including Alex, who had saved her a spot. It was against company policy for two employees to date, but nobody had figured it out yet.

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” Rose began in her typical fashion. “I’m sure it’s no surprise to any of you that we’re moving along very well with Tobi as a new client. This partnership could mean the start of a new line of products, elevated status in the design world, and a nice advancement for all of us, especially if the merger goes ahead.”

The news was great. Kaylee was excited. If this deal went well, she would be promoted to a designer position and would have her own assistant. The thought had her daydreaming and paying little attention to the meeting.

“Kaylee? Will that be a problem?”

Kaylee jolted back to reality, and looked around the table at staring faces. Fumbling, she tried to remember the last thing she heard. Nothing was coming to her.

“No, it shouldn’t be, but if anything comes up, I’ll let you know.” Kaylee tried to give the most vague answer possible. To her relief everyone moved on and stopped staring.
