I have seen two examples of Comanche bows that were incised, or carved, on the belly. One, in the Smithsonian's storage, had two 3" long arrows scratched into the wood on each limb. The other, in a museum in Ft. Worth, Texas, had a pattern of triangles and lines carved on the belly. The incised designs were then painted red and blue. This is a striking decoration, but was most unusual. A customer once had me recreate a Northeastern-style bow, which had six incised circles on the belly. The circles, three per limb, were each the size of a dime. They started at the handle and were about two inches apart, with the carved area painted red. The red circles on the bright yellow Osage orange made an interesting combination.
