Chapter Ten

Morgana had to drag herself out of bed the following morning. It had been another late night, with driving to Westpoint and then the work involved in settling Ellie back in their mother’s house. Understandably, her sister had been inconsolable throughout it all.

Morwenna had been out for the count when Morgana finally made it back home, and she was still sleeping as Morgana went downstairs to open her shop the following morning. Perhaps Morwenna really had been telling the truth that actresses drank very little and went to bed early. Or perhaps her London lifestyle had taken its toll, and she’d returned to Portmage to catch up on her beauty sleep.

Morgana had a busy morning restocking shelves and putting through orders, interrupted only by the occasional browser. It was after lunch when Morwenna finally appeared looking well-rested and with her hair freshly washed. Morgana felt haggard beside her sister.

She filled Morwenna in on the latest developments regarding Gregory’s arrest, but Morwenna simply said, “I told you so.” She then did a circuit of the shop touching various things and pulling faces at the price tags until she eventually hopped up onto the serving counter and crossed her legs, making herself comfortable.

“I thought you said you weren’t going to steal my shoes,” Morgana said, glaring at Morwenna’s feet.

“You can’t seriously think I wanted to? These are perfectly hideous. But none of mine are really suitable for walking around the village, are they?”

“No, they’re not,” Morgana agreed flatly. “What on earth possessed you to pack six pairs of kitten heels for a visit to Portmage?”

“How precise of you,” Morwenna said, raising an eyebrow. “I see somebody saw fit to paw through my suitcase?”

“And I see you’ve been through my drawers, too. That ‘resting witch face’ t-shirt is definitely mine.” She looked suspiciously at the jeans Morwenna also wore and decided they, at least, weren’t hers. “Except, I swear that t-shirt doesn’t look nearly so tight across the chest on me. Don’t tell me you’ve had your boobs done?”

“Don’t be silly, it’s just a push up bra.”

“It’s a pneumatic bra is what it is.”

“If you want to borrow anything of mine, feel free,” Morwenna said, breezily deflecting the argument before it started. “Goodness knows you need an update to your wardrobe. Especially, if you’re going to go out for dinner with a handsome man. I take it your late night means it went well? Did he grind your nightshade?”

“Did he what?” Morgana quirked an eyebrow, looking up from her order book.

“Grind your nightshade, pump your pepper, put some gin in your zinger,” Morwenna laughed.

Morgana shook her head. “Where do you pick these expressions up? And no, we don’t all jump into bed with a man on the first date.”

“Boring,” Morwenna said in a singsong voice. She then proceeded to rip open a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and eat them noisily as Morgana tried to refocus on her stock ordering.

“Do you mind not dropping crisps all over my floor,” Morgana complained. “I just swept that this morning.
