Chapter Ten
Morgana had to drag herself out of bed the following morning. It had been another late night, with driving to Westpoint and then the work involved in settling Ellie back in their motherâs house. Understandably, her sister had been inconsolable throughout it all.
Morwenna had been out for the count when Morgana finally made it back home, and she was still sleeping as Morgana went downstairs to open her shop the following morning. Perhaps Morwenna really had been telling the truth that actresses drank very little and went to bed early. Or perhaps her London lifestyle had taken its toll, and sheâd returned to Portmage to catch up on her beauty sleep.
Morgana had a busy morning restocking shelves and putting through orders, interrupted only by the occasional browser. It was after lunch when Morwenna finally appeared looking well-rested and with her hair freshly washed. Morgana felt haggard beside her sister.
She filled Morwenna in on the latest developments regarding Gregoryâs arrest, but Morwenna simply said, âI told you so.â She then did a circuit of the shop touching various things and pulling faces at the price tags until she eventually hopped up onto the serving counter and crossed her legs, making herself comfortable.
âI thought you said you werenât going to steal my shoes,â Morgana said, glaring at Morwennaâs feet.
âYou canât seriously think I wanted to? These are perfectly hideous. But none of mine are really suitable for walking around the village, are they?â
âNo, theyâre not,â Morgana agreed flatly. âWhat on earth possessed you to pack six pairs of kitten heels for a visit to Portmage?â
âHow precise of you,â Morwenna said, raising an eyebrow. âI see somebody saw fit to paw through my suitcase?â
âAnd I see youâve been through my drawers, too. That âresting witch faceâ t-shirt is definitely mine.â She looked suspiciously at the jeans Morwenna also wore and decided they, at least, werenât hers. âExcept, I swear that t-shirt doesnât look nearly so tight across the chest on me. Donât tell me youâve had your boobs done?â
âDonât be silly, itâs just a push up bra.â
âItâs a pneumatic bra is what it is.â
âIf you want to borrow anything of mine, feel free,â Morwenna said, breezily deflecting the argument before it started. âGoodness knows you need an update to your wardrobe. Especially, if youâre going to go out for dinner with a handsome man. I take it your late night means it went well? Did he grind your nightshade?â
âDid he what?â Morgana quirked an eyebrow, looking up from her order book.
âGrind your nightshade, pump your pepper, put some gin in your zinger,â Morwenna laughed.
Morgana shook her head. âWhere do you pick these expressions up? And no, we donât all jump into bed with a man on the first date.â
âBoring,â Morwenna said in a singsong voice. She then proceeded to rip open a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and eat them noisily as Morgana tried to refocus on her stock ordering.
âDo you mind not dropping crisps all over my floor,â Morgana complained. âI just swept that this morning.
