Bloodlust

“Surprise!” my pack screamed.

I jumped so high I was sure they would have to peel me off the ceiling. I stared wide-eyed at my pack, who surrounded my bed. They were all there; Mother, Baran, Grey, Mund, Tegan, Nia, Shikoba, Kane, Brychan, Channing, Cara, Quinn, Gwyn, and Odin. Had they gone crazy? I pulled my blanket up over myself a little tighter.

“Well, I’m surprised,” I said groggily. “Now why am I surprised?”

“It’s your birthday, m’ eudail,” Mother said, sitting next to me. “Happy seventeenth birthday.”

Only one year left. I felt scared for no reason at all, but I was. Would I be ready in one year to stake my claim as leader of our people in front of them all at Carrowmore? Mother kissed my cheeks and handed me a gift wrapped in gold paper. I’d forgotten my own birthday. I gently opened it, and inside I found a beautiful crocheted veil. I ran my fingers over the intricately detailed wedding veil, feeling the exquisite design.

“I made it for you,” Mother said.

My eyes filled with tears as I hugged her tightly to me. “It’s beautiful,” I whispered.

“Just like you.”

“I love you, Mother.”

“Tha gaol agam ort,” she said, kissing my cheek again.

Channing knelt next to the bed, and I started trying to smooth my wild hair, but it was no use. He smiled and handed me a red velvet box. Inside lay a stunning emerald-and-diamond necklace. The emerald beads were suspended from a row of diamond flowers. Like the canary diamond ring, it was extravagant and stunning.

“Thank you, Channing,” I said. “You have given me too much.”

“The stars aren’t good enough for you,” he said with a smile.

I carefully closed the box as I rubbed the velvety outside. I couldn’t even imagine what he’d spent to have this made for me. It was over the top, but generally so was he. I couldn’t deny the necklace’s beauty or his sweet intentions, but it made me feel uncomfortable accepting it.

Brychan came forward and handed me a small brown package tied with string. The wrapping reminded me of the gifts Mund used to bring to us on the cliffs. I slowly opened the present, and inside the crisp paper was a brand-new sketchbook and pencils. He must have noticed I had almost filled mine drawing all the interesting people I’d seen at Castle Raglan. It was immensely thoughtful and far more suited to my taste than Channing’s gift.

“Thank you, Brychan. I guess you watch me more than I realized,” I said.

“Happy birthday,” he said.

Grey knelt in front of me and took my hand in his. He looked worried, and I could feel his nervousness. He lightly rubbed his thumb over my hand as he began.

“Ashling, I tried to decide what to get you for your birthday, and many ideas came to mind, but this is the one I wanted to give you most,” Grey said.

He leaned forward and kissed me. His soft lips met mine and I swooned. I felt lightheaded, and my face flushed as my body responded to his touch.
