Chapter Eighteen

NOW

I woke alone in bed again. She had locked the bedroom window; the door was closed. Mercy had likely locked me in. So much for trusting me not to leave. The bed creaked as I sat up. Hot air pumped through a vent on the floor, making the room sweltering. I wished she’d left me a fan or something, but it was smart of her not to. Too many pieces that could be deadly in my hands.

I leaned forward as if to pull myself out of bed and froze, suddenly aware of eyes watching me from somewhere in the room. Quickly, I spun to look in each of the corners behind the bed. Nothing but shadows.

A light thumping skittered from one end of the room to the other, the sound of bare hands and feet on wood. I pulled myself out of bed and scanned the floor, but there was no one in there. At least, no one on the floor.

Slowly, I raised my eyes to the ceiling. Mercy clung to the rough surface by her fingers and toes, strands of hair hanging down like black yarn. Yellow eyes stared back at me, lighting up a wicked smile.

Cute. The demon thought it had shocked me. “Crawling on the ceiling. Never seen that before.”

“Such a sharp tongue.” The demon drew its tongue across Mercy’s lips before dropping to the floor with a thud. “Mercy would do well to rip it out of your head.”

“Is she awake in there?”

The demon rose from where it had landed. “Maybe. And maybe a sleeping body is more useful to me than it is to her.”

I sighed and eased back onto the bed. “What do you want, demon?”

The demon gripped the decorative pole at the end of the bed, swinging around it before hopping up to defy gravity by sitting sideways perched on it. “What I want is free from this rotten carcass. I want this wretched whore to shrivel up and die in agony. But more than that, I want her to take all of you holy pricks with her. Especially you, Felix Cross. Oh, especially you.”

“You have some personal vendetta against me?” I pulled my legs up onto the bed and made a show of getting comfortable. If the demon wanted to get under my skin, it was going to have to try harder than that.

“There’s a price on your head in Hell. Did you know that? A bounty. I intend to collect it.”

I shrugged. “What’s the currency exchange like? Do you get paid in David Bowie records or what?”

“Favors,” answered the demon. “Favor with the Prince of Darkness himself, or with souls. Personal stashes of them to torture and maim at will. It depends on the contract. But not your soul. The Devil himself wants your soul, Felix.”

“It’s good to be wanted, I guess. Let’s me know I’m doing something right.”

The demon’s smile turned into a snarl. It spun Mercy’s body around the pole and launched itself into the bed with me. “I know what you’re doing with her.
