EURASIAN EAGLE-OWL Bubo bubo 60–75cm, wingspan 138–170cm

Resident in mountains from the Pyrenees to the Jura (and also the Vosges). Most common in Provence–Alpes–Côte d’Azure. Favours undisturbed natural areas, far from human habitation, particularly rocky cliffs. Strictly nocturnal, emerging at dusk, when male and female call to each other: a deep bou-hou. Massive owl, larger than Common Buzzard. Size alone distinguishes it from other family members: thickset, big-headed and broad-winged. If seen perched in torchlight (or roosting bird encountered by day), orange eyes and ear-tufts differentiate it from all bar Long-eared Owl.
